More options

Required for fixed terms. For open-ended contracts an optional minimum term.

Empty = the contract ends after the initial term.

Empty = today.

Comma-separated, e.g. "30, 7". Used for the calendar file.

Try an example: 24-month software subscription, 12-month renewals, 90 days notice · Open-ended contract: 3 months to the end of a quarter · Gym: 12 months minimum, then one month notice any time

More about this tool

How it works

Computes the term table of a contract (initial term, automatic renewals) or the earliest end of an open-ended contract (notice on any day, to the end of a month, quarter or year), the last day your notice must arrive, the days left and an iCalendar file with reminders. The same engine powers the deadlines view of Paperwell.

  • A term of N months that starts on 15 March runs up to and including 14 March of the following period (start + N months − 1 day). Month arithmetic clamps to the last day of shorter months (31 January + 1 month = 28/29 February).
  • Notice "N before the end of the term" must arrive at the latest on the last day of the term minus N: three months before 31 December is 30 September; 90 days before 31 December is 2 October, so the 90 days from 3 October to 31 December fit completely.
  • Open-ended contracts: notice on any day ends the contract after the notice period; with a month/quarter/year rule the contract ends on the first period end whose notice deadline is still ahead. A minimum term moves the earliest end to its last day.
  • Business days skip Saturdays and Sundays only; public holidays are not known. Past renewal cycles are skipped so the table starts at the current term.
  • The calendar file contains one all-day event per last notice day with reminder alarms; UIDs are stable, so re-importing updates the events instead of duplicating them.

Not legal advice. Contracts, local law (e.g. consumer rules that shorten notice periods) and the way notice must be delivered can change the result; check the contract wording and keep proof of delivery.

How to use the Contract Notice Deadlines calculator

Work out the last day your cancellation must arrive for fixed-term, auto-renewing and open-ended contracts, and get a calendar file with reminders.

What it is for

Contracts rarely say "cancel by 2 August 2028". They say "24 months, then renews for 12 months unless either party gives 90 days' notice". Turning that into a date means month arithmetic, counting backwards from the end of a term and remembering that a missed deadline locks you in for another full year. This tool does that arithmetic for you.

It handles fixed terms with automatic renewals, open-ended contracts that end on any day, and contracts that can only end at the end of a calendar month, quarter or year — with an optional minimum term. You get a table of terms, the next last notice day, the days left and an iCalendar file with reminders.

It does not read the contract for you (the before-you-sign tool does that) and it knows nothing about public holidays, consumer rules that override the contract, or how notice must be delivered.

Worked example

A software subscription starts on 1 November 2026, runs 24 months, renews for 12 months and needs 90 days notice. Kind of contract: Fixed term: notice before the end of the term; reference day 2026-10-26; terms to list: 3; reminders "30, 7".

The tool answers: Give notice by 2028-08-02 (646 days from 2026-10-26) to end Software subscription on 2028-10-31. The term table:

Worked example
TermStartEndLast notice day
12026-11-012028-10-312028-08-02
22028-11-012029-10-312029-08-02
32029-11-012030-10-312030-08-02

Why 2 August? The 90 days from 3 August to 31 October must fit completely before the term ends, so the notice has to arrive on 2 August at the latest.

An open-ended insurance with 3 months to the end of a quarter, started 2024-04-01, gives: Give notice by 2026-12-31 (66 days from 2026-10-26) to end Insurance on 2027-03-31. Missing that date moves the earliest end to 30 June 2027.

How to read the result

  • Last day to give notice is the number that matters: your letter or e-mail must have arrived by then.
  • Days left counts from the reference day. Below 15 days the tool adds a warning.
  • Ends if notice is given is the end date you get by meeting that deadline.
  • The Terms and notice deadlines table shows later cycles too; "Renews without notice" tells you what happens if you do nothing.
  • Info callouts explain rules that shaped the result, such as a minimum term pushing the earliest end back.
  • Download calendar file (.ics) contains one all-day event per future deadline with your reminders.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Enter the start date of the contract, not the day you signed it — the term usually runs from the start of service.
  • "Three months" and "90 days" are not the same: before 31 December they give 30 September and 2 October.
  • Use business days only when the contract says so; weekends are skipped, holidays are not.
  • For a gym with "12 months minimum, then monthly notice", choose Open-ended: notice on any day and set the minimum term.
  • Re-importing a newer calendar file updates the existing events, because the event ids are stable.
  • Send notice a few days early and keep proof of delivery.

FAQ

Does notice have to arrive or just be sent by that day?

The tool assumes it must arrive, which is how most contracts and laws count notice periods. If your contract counts the sending date, you have a little more time.

What if the last notice day falls on a weekend?

The date stays where it is. Weekends and public holidays do not move the deadline here, so plan for delivery before it.

Can it read the periods from my contract?

Not this tool. Paperwell runs the contract reading first and suggests the term, renewal and notice period for this calculation.

No. Local consumer law can shorten notice periods or limit renewals; check the contract wording and, for important decisions, ask a professional.
